New Degree of Master of Music in Sacred Music by Composition

Picture
Master of  Music in Sacred Music by Composition

The degree of Master of Music (M.Mus.) in Sacred Music is a traditional style 36 credit degrees at the master’s level. The duration of the degree is normally 2 to 3 years of part-time study. A candidate will be expected to  demonstrate sufficient preparation viz. their prior academic and professional studies to qualify for admission to this degree. The standard of compositional skill and technical knowledge required is of a professional standard but does not demand as original a voice as with a composition based doctoral degree. There are several required modules for the degree although advanced placement exemptions for up to 12 credits are available for holders of certain diplomas from recognised music colleges. This will normally enable a candidate to complete the degree requirements, part-time, in 1.5 to 2 years. The total composition length is between 15 to 20 minutes. If the composition and the oral defence are passed at a high enough level, as assessed by the examiners, the M.Mus. degree may be awarded with distinction or with merit. Failure to pass the composition, after a second resubmission attempt, will usually result in the award of a Graduate Diploma of Studies (G.Dip.St.) in Sacred Music as the terminal award. The Master of Music is a postgraduate award for those aspiring to advance their composition abilities and is therefore entirely composition based with a two-work portfolio. The Master of Music by Blended Assessment allows for an extended commentary upon their creative practice in context and is therefore more suitable to those intending futher academic research at a higher level or mixed mode doctoral studies. This may take the form of an essay, conference paper or other matter in agreement with the student’s tutor.
