Degree Requirements
The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Religion and Humanities by Completion of Research is awarded by the University. The Board of Admissions may approve for candidacy an application that has completed an appropriate and fully recognised preparatory course of study of sufficient rigour but has not progressed to the actual completion of a doctoral dissertation (sometimes called ABD). Based on prior approved study, the candidate may be admitted directly to the research preparation and dissertation proposal stage. 24 degree credits are applied. The Ph.D. degree will take not less than 2 years of part-time study to complete. If the dissertation fails to satisfy the examiners, the candidate may be asked to revise and resubmit the dissertation. If the dissertation, again, is deemed unsatisfactory, the candidate may be awarded an M.Phil. degree in Religion and Humanities.
Prior ABD or equivalent status 24 credits applied towards the 60 credits required for a doctoral degree:
1) PHL620--Craft of Research and Writing (3 credits)
2) PHL628--Literature Review and Research Proposal (3 credits)
3) PHL640--Supervised Dissertation Writing (30 credits in blocks of 3 credits, thereafter continuing registration at 0 credit hours)
4) PHL650--Presentation and Oral Defence of the Dissertation (0 credits)
