Master of Arts in Philosophy and Religion
Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts degree (M.A.) in Philosophy and Religion requires the completion of 36 credits of graduate studies. The duration of the degree is normally 2 to 3 years of part-time study. Up to 9 credits, with approval, upon admission, may be awarded for prior graduate equivalent studies towards the degree. All students are required to take the required courses. Upon completion of all the required and elective course work, students are required to take a comprehensive exam for the degree. Students must pass the comprehensive exam in order to proceed to the writing of a 15 to 20,000 word thesis on an approved topic. If both the comprehensive exam and the thesis are passed at a high enough standard, as assessed by the examiners, the degree of M.A. may be awarded with distinction or merit. If a candidate fails the comprehensive exam, it may be retaken one more time. If failed at a second attempt, the examiners may award a Graduate Diploma of Studies (G.Dip.St.) in Philosophy and Religion as the terminal award. The Diploma will also usually be awarded if the dissertation, after a second resubmission attempt, is unsuccessful.
