Degree Requirements
The degree of Doctor of Education (EdD) in Religious Education is professional doctorate requiring 60 credits at doctoral level intended to intellectually challenging and stimulate professional thinking. A minimum of 4 years part-time study is normally needed for doctoral degree completion with 12 credits are applied towards the degree from previous study. 48 credits are thus normally needed. The EdD project portfolio length is 50 to 60,000 words. If the portfolio fails to satisfy the examiners, the candidate may be asked to revise and resubmit the material. If the submission again is deemed unsatisfactory, the candidate may be awarded an MEd degree. Research topics should focus upon education within a religious context and may explore any relevant area such as leadership and management, doctrinal approaches, teaching styles and curriculum construction as examples. The standard of research required should display an understanding of the wider field of but with significant in-depth knowledge of the selected focus. If the portfolio and the oral defence are passed at a high enough level, as assessed by the examiners, the EdD degree may be awarded with Merit or Distinction.
Candidates for entry should normally hold a related Master’s degree and at least 2 years professional experience in a middle management or senior role in education or be retired from a similar position.

2. Registration at 0 credit hours;
3. Submission of a substantial portfolio integrating the nature of the sustained contribution to learning made by the candidate;
4. Publications and other papers supporting the representations made in the portfolio submission;
5. Peer reviewed assessment;
6. Oral presentation and defence of the significance of the contribution made to learning.
